Murder at Sea - 29 Aug 08 - Part 2


Thousands of runaway fishermen from Myanmar are estimated to be on the island of Tual in Indonesia's far eastern Bandar sea.The refugees say they have survived murder and slavery on the high seas in Thai fishing boats.

Having jumped ship they say they are now stranded. Al Jazeera visited their "Island of the damned".

Thai Captains need to be regulated. There should be strict laws in becoming a Thai Captain. Even if you lose out economically in the end you will win. They should make it a law that there should be Burmese Captains on Thai boats. There should be a mixture of Thai and Burmese Captains. Then have equal pay be given to both, and have the Thai government increase wages or have the Burmese refuse to work. Imagine the millions of Burmese fishermen were to just suddenly stop working? lots of money loss
