Doctors' Feat in Tskhinval ~ read the story! ~Подвиг врачей Цхинвала
During the terrible bombing of Tshinval, doctors from the Republican Hospital have saved more than four hundred people. South-Ossetian doctors did the impossible. They rescued all the wounded. None of them has died, they dragged even the worst injuries. 232 operations were done in the clinic basement! In the dilapidated city hospital of Tshinval doctors still save lives. Though, now working in specialized operating rooms and doctors' lounges. And then, on the 7-th and 8-th of August, when the city was bombed from all sides, doctors had to move patients to the basement. In one room they equippedan operating room, in another - a bandage room. Dozens were injured. Bleeding people were placed in the corridor on the mattresses put on the concrete floor.
-- There was no electricity, and doctors had to operate in the light of kerosene lamps. There were so many wounded that surgeons were not even able to rest: as soon as one operation ended, immediately began another, - holding back an unexpected tear, explains Nodar Kokoev, the chief physician of the Tshinval Hospital.
-- I am becoming terrified when I go down here. This is a miracle that in such unsanitary conditions, we have not losta single patient.
Only in the first days of the war the Republican Hospital surgeons conducted about two hundred operations.
Local residents helped with medicines and food.
-- They brought us bread, sugar, domestic harvesting, many brought all the medicines they had at home, - continues Nodar Kokoev - and we all slept together - the sick, healthy and doctors. On the third night, it was simply nothing in the room to breathe. And only occasionally have we raised at the staircase leading to the first floor to swallow fresh air. But it was extremely dangerous to stay there for a long time - shrapnel was flying from all sides.
Specific smell still remains in the hospital basement. In the narrow passageways corridor there are mattresses and pillows covered with coagulated blood. Hospital beds with metal nets stay in small rooms - the most seriously injured laid up there, dropping bottlesare still here and there. Nodar Kokoev, the chief physician, descended into the basement for the first time after the war. Even for him, an experienced doctor, it is hard to hold back tears at the sight of such a weird picture.
-- This scum Saakashvili ought to be here, and I would be glad to single out one of these rooms for him. Let him breath the purulent scent and experience everything that those people have experienced, - said Nodar Kokoev, showing a tiny dark room in the basement.

Actually, this story painfully resembles analogous stories of World War II, when russians also had to organize hospitals underground and make operations days and nights, without rest. A lot of cities were in the state of siege during that great war. Who could imagine that these days will repeat again?
