So Close Yet So Far (Chapter 2)

I forgot to write this in the first chapter but since so many of you want to be Kevin's love interest we may have to do some kind of contest but i'm not sure what yet, so be on the lookout for that.----{Riley's P.O.V.}I walked out of the office and found my friends, Casper, Connor, Jessie, and Seth. Seth had his arm around Jessie's waist. I thought they were a cute couple, but it drove me crazy seeing them all the time, and I wasn't sure why. I guess it reminded me that Joe wasn't there and that he didn't care about me like that anymore. I would never admit that to anyone though. It was hard enough to admit it to myself."RC, our resident trouble maker!" Casper said when he saw me coming. Someone along the way had realized my initials were like a RC car, and I guess it stuck."Hey guys.""What you in for now?""I fell asleep in Mr. Jackson's class. I mean what does that guy expect with a voice like his?""Detention?" Jessie asked."Yep.""Me too.""Really? What'd you do?""Well if your plan in making faces at me was to get my in trouble, then you succeeded. I couldn't resist laughing at your monkey bit and Mr. Davis thought I was laughing at him, and let's just say he didn't really appreciate that much.""He just gave you detention like that without even sending you to Tom's office?""Well, you know Mr. Davis.""At least we'll both be there. McCarthy's supervising so it should be a party."{Joe's P.O.V.}
I lay on my back on the couch of the lounge, staring at the ceiling trying to figure out how I was gonna make this work. If she would just answer my phone calls, I could talk it out with her, but I knew better than to hope for that.
"Hey, Joe?" Nick said as he looked through his phone.
"What?" I snapped. It came out a lot more hostile than I had intended it to.
"You know tomorrow's Riley's birthday, right?"
"Yes, of course I know that."
"Jeez, calm down. I was just looking at the date and I remembered. No need to get all feisty."
"Do you think I'd forget her birthday?" Iknew I was taking out my anger and frustration on the wrong people, but they were there, and they were easy targets.
"Joe, calm down," Kevin said, and the fact that he jumped into a conversation that didn't concern him just made me angrier.
"I'm gonna go take a nap or something."
"Good idea," Kevin said.
"Yeah, and wake up with some sense," Nick added.
"Shut up!" I snapped before I went to the bunk room. I collapsed on my bunk and lay still for a minute. Then I took out my phone and scrolled down in the contacts to R. I hesitated on her name for a minute and then pushed send even though I knew it was probably useless.

{Riley's P.O.V.}
I was sitting in detention, pretending to do homework like I was supposed to be doing, but really I couldn't have cared less about my homework. I saw my phone light up, so I quietly took it out, using the desk to block Mr. McCarthy's view and looked at it. The call from read JJ. I sighed and pushed the ignore button. I had had to change his name in my phone when they got all famous. I thought about deleting it a few times, but I couldn't get myself to do it. A second or so later, it flashed that I had a message. I deleted it withouteven listening to it.
I looked up at Jessie and made eye contact. When she established the contact she started to sign. "Who was it?" she asked.
"No one, just this annoying guy." I hadn't told anyone at my high school about Joe. I had told my friends the story but had left out the name.
"Sameone who always calls you?"
"Yeah."
Mr. McCarthy looked up and we put our hands back on the desk. "Girls, what's going on?"
"Huh?" we said, playing innocent.
"Right, well, whatever it is, cut it out." He looked back at his work, so we started signing again. I had started learning ASL when I wasabout 10. Denise, Joe's mom, started teaching me when I told her I thought it looked cool, but when I lost touch with Joe, I lost touch with the whole family, so I had to teach myself using the internet and relying on Jessie who tended to know less not more than me. She only knew it at all cause she had a deaf friend in elementary school.
"So your birthday's tomorrow, huh?" she said.
I actually had to think about it. "Yeah, it is."
"You forgot?"
"Yeah, I don't really care about it, I guess."
"You're probably getting something cool, right?"
"I don't know. My mom keeps saying she has somebig surprise for me."

what's her mom's surprise? how is she gonna react when the boys come back? it's a bad cliff, and this was kinda a filler but like i said before it is the beginning so i gotta set some stuff up. there's probably at least one more filler before things get really interestingbut we'll see.
