HOPE FOR THE WORLD


These flags have been made from discarded plastic bags that have been collected from local rivers and open spaces through the work of the Riversmeet Community Network( www.riversmeet.org) in The English Lake District. The flags profile the logos and images of global corporate advertising and have been decorated with the hopes and prayers of local people. In concept they echo the long tradition dating back to ancient Buddhist philosophy and spiritual traditions where flags are traditionally adorned with symbols and prayers. By placing the flags high in the mountains the natural energy of the wind animates our thoughts and prayers to flow around the world. The origin of the plastic, that is the fabric of this work, reaches back into the mysteries of the earth's early evolution, when the oil deposits, that have fuelled the growth of our global economy, were laid down. The processes involved in producing these images take the work forward in time to digital video technology and the internet.Today I am inviting people across the World to explore their hopes for the future, at a time of mounting environmental and humanitarian crisis and to let leaders across the World know what we expect of them. The Earth Charter is a declaration of fundamental principles for building a just, sustainable and peaceful global society. It is a call to action for people throughout the world to inspire positive change. By adding your hopes to this project you are sending a message to our leaders of the values and principles that you stand for. I believe that leadership is a human quality that we can all embody and that each one of us can take personal responsibility to play our part in the future well-being of life on earth. If enough citizens align themselves with the principles of The Charter and take action in their own communities, we have the power to change the world.
